The Valpolicella Classica is a hillside area of the Veneto Region situated North West of the City of Verona; the nature of its terrain is calcareous; from the geological point of view, scholars date the area from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
The climate is generally mild and temperate, with precipitations between 900 and 1100 mm per year.
The production of wine has always been the most important agricultural activity in the area.
Definite traces of oenological activity in the Valpolicella have been dated to the Etruscan period, between the VII and V centuries B.C., but more precise indications about the fame of several Veronese wines were provided by Roman writers.
