SONDRAIA BIANCO
the new Viognier
by Poggio al Tesoro

Illuminated by the radiant light of the Tuscan coast and caressed by sea breezes, Sondraia Bianco is a wine destined to take on the challenge of time and become the cipher of outstanding winemaking at the Poggio al Tesoro estate. “Bolgheri was love at first sight”, comments Marilisa Allegrini, owner of Poggio al Tesoro, which comprises a total of 105 hectares, 64 of which are vineyards, immersed in the Mediterranean scrub on the Tuscan coast.
“Since 2001, the year in which we decided to set down roots in this wonderful land, our goal has always been to enhance our remarkable agronomic heritage in the best possible way and at the same time rediscover the potential of this unique terroir”. The path embarked upon at Poggio al Tesoro has led to the creation of a new wine, Sondraia Costa Toscana Bianco IGT: a 100% Viognier that makes its debuts on the market with the 2019 vintage in a limited edition of only 2,750 bottles and 150 magnums, attesting to the importance this wine has within the company’s production.
“With a mild autumn, ideal rainfall in spring and an August characterised by cool nights, fine daytime breezes and some light rain, 2019 was truly one of the best vintages in the last 15 years”, says Lorenzo Fortini, oenologist at Poggio al Tesoro. Broad, intense and all-enveloping, it owes its refined but versatile character to skilful fine tuning to preserve the freshness and aromas of Viognier, in line with the company’s philosophy of aiming for minimal intervention – in the vineyard as much as in the cellar – to enable maximum freedom of expression for each vine and guarantee its uniqueness and identity. The proximity to the sea of the vineyard from which its grapes come, Valle di Cerbaia, located on clayey soils with east-west exposure, gives it a fragrant flavour and a Mediterranean personality that immediately recall the Tuscan coast. To ensure the highest quality and the preservation of the aromas, the grapes are harvested manually at night, a common practice at Poggio al Tesoro in particular for those varieties more sensitive to light and heat. After the soft pressing of the grapes – previously cooled down – the winemaking begins with a maceration on the skins at a controlled temperature. The must is then separated and completes the fermentation in steel vats (50%), terracotta amphorae (20%) and French oak barrels (30%), where it rests until August of the following year: the wood yields breadth and structure, softening the tannins of their greener notes; the amphora provides verticality and depth thanks to the contact with the terracotta; the steel helps to preserve freshness and guarantees a persistent and highly elegant finish. Sondraia Bianco offers the most characteristic and evocative elements of its native home: the sun, the sea and the typical scents of the Mediterranean scrub.
Lorenzo Fortini: “With a golden yellow colour, Sondraia Bianco reveals a captivating aromatic profile, characterised by delicate floral aromas followed by stronger citrus notes such as orange peel and essential oils. On the palate it reveals considerable texture, with evident sweet tannins, supporting a pleasant acidity that translates into a persistent, elegant finish. Its versatility makes it ideal in combination with seafood soups and main courses of fish in sauce, but also with more decisive flavours such as goat cheeses, foie gras and sweet and sour lamb”. The result of an excellent vintage, Sondraia Bianco joins the wide range of Poggio al Tesoro wines and is preparing to achieve important milestones: a great white with a strong personality and surprising evolutionary potential.
